Dr. Kimberly Petersen, a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and director of the Undergraduate Research, Scholarships, and Creativity Office (URSCO), has received a new $125,000 grant award from the American Chemical Society’s Petroleum Research Fund.

The project is titled “Development of Novel Insertion Reactions into 1,2-Oxazetidines to yield Interesting Heterocycles.”

Dr. Petersen’s research group is focused on the development of new methods for the asymmetric synthesis of biologically important molecules and in the design and synthesis of new drug targets.

Project Abstract:

The use of strained heterocycles in the development of novel chemistry is an area of growth in organic chemistry.  1,2-Oxazetines are a relatively new class of strained heterocycles obtained from simple chemical feedstocks that offer a unique opportunity to incorporate both an O and N atom into the product molecule.  This proposal outlines three new insertion reactions into 1,2-oxazetitines.  The greatly complex heterocycles formed are generally understudied ring systems with a high degree of non-planarity.  Support from this ACS PRF ND grant would provide funds for the training of future leaders in chemical research with the ability to examine problems from varied viewpoints.
