The CAS Office of Research is pleased to announce the 2026–27 Dorothy Levis Munroe Student Research Grant Program, which provides funding to support undergraduate and graduate student research in the natural sciences and mathematics.
The program was established through the generosity of Dorothy Levis Munroe ’44, who attended UNCG with her twin sister, Katheryne Levis McCormick. Both earned degrees in chemistry. Munroe later earned a master’s degree in chemistry, taught high school mathematics, and became the first woman to serve on the Board of Education in Newark, Delaware. In her later years, she established an endowed fund at UNCG to give students resources to explore and pursue scientific research.
Supporting the Next Generation of Researchers
The Munroe Student Research Grant supports undergraduate and graduate students conducting research in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Environment and Sustainability, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics. Students may use the funding for research materials and supplies as well as research-related travel and conference presentations, including transportation, lodging, and food. Funds may not be used for student stipends.
Each award provides up to $1,000 per student, and approximately 18 awards are expected to be available for the 2026–27 academic year. A single faculty mentor may oversee a maximum of two applications.
Munroe funding has helped students purchase specialized research materials, conduct experiments, analyze data, travel for research, and present their work at scientific meetings and conferences. Students supported by the program have pursued projects ranging from the effects of microplastics on inflammation to peptide synthesis, cell and molecular biology, synthetic chemistry, artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction, and mathematics.
2026–27 Application Timeline
- Applications open: August 18, 2026
- Application deadline: September 18, 2026, by 5 p.m.
- Award decisions: End of September 2026
- Award period: Funds must support research activities during the 2026-27 academic year.
- Final report deadline: April 30, 2027. Awardees must submit a report describing their research progress, lessons learned, and how the funding supported their work.
Applications for the 2026-27 Munroe Award will be submitted through InfoReady. Students must log in using their UNCG email credentials to access and complete the application. Applicants are encouraged to work with their faculty mentors in advance to develop their research proposal and budget and to allow sufficient time to complete all application requirements before the deadline.
