The College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Office invites proposals for the second year of the Tew Ignite Transdisciplinary Research Fund.
Established to support the development of new research networks that connect the College of Arts & Sciences with other UNCG colleges and schools, the fund is made possible through the generous support of Laura and Chris Tew. Their contribution will sustain the fund for the next 10 years.
The Tew Ignite Transdisciplinary Research Fund will support one award of $10,000 to $25,000 each year. The fund prioritizes the research aspirations of UNCG tenured and tenure-track faculty, with preference given to projects likely to lead to external funding and/or significant recognition of scholarly or creative work. A panel of UNCG experts will review proposals and make recommendations to the Dean of CAS for concurrence and award.
Eligibility and collaboration requirements
Proposals are solicited from all UNCG faculty members. To be eligible, proposals must:
- Represent new partnerships rather than established research collaborations.
- Involve a collaborative team spanning more than one discipline.
- Include at least one faculty member from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, Mathematics/Statistics, or Computer Science in the College of Arts & Sciences.
The principal investigator does not need to be from one of these disciplines or from CAS.
Budget and project period
Requests may range from $10,000 to $25,000. Allowable costs include student research assistants—undergraduate or graduate—project materials, travel, and other project-related expenses. Funds may not be used for faculty salary support or course buyouts.
Projects may last up to 18 months and must begin on July 1, 2027.
Submission requirements
Submit an application through InfoReady that includes:
- Project narrative (2 pages): Project description, primary activities, anticipated outcomes, and external funding opportunities to be pursued after the project.
- Budget and budget justification (2 pages): Itemized expenses, total request, and, if applicable, past, present, or pending funding from other sources.
- Timeline (1 page): Start and end dates and major milestones. The start date must be July 1, 2027.
- CVs: Up to two pages for each PI and Co-PI.
- Optional references or supplemental materials: Up to two pages.
Key dates
- Submission deadline: Monday, March 1, 2027, at 11:59 p.m.
- Award notification: On or before April 15, 2027
- Project start date: July 1, 2027
Post-award expectations
Award recipients will be expected to:
- Spend funds according to the approved budget.
- Work with an assigned mentor to develop the funded research or creative work into an external funding proposal.
- Inform CAS Associate Dean for Research Dr. Charles Egeland about publications, creative works, and/or grants resulting from the award.
