ITS deadline of 6/30/2024 for site migrations has passed. I was given leeway due to the larger volume of sites under my purview, but sites must still be migrated as soon as possible.
TEMPLATE
Department sites will launch with only the higher priority pages and information, because we have to start somewhere. After all sites have launched, we can and will return to yours to add more content.
DEPT RESPONSIBILITY
Make sure your site’s content is up-to-date. This is my reference material as I make decisions about content placement within your new site. Outdated content will not be included in new websites.
NEW EXPECTATIONS
Website purpose has evolved since the older sites were created. Currently, the purpose of department websites is marketing, and our target audience is prospective students (and their parents).
The new sites are to be kept lean, and the university now requires complete, page-by-page audits of migrated sites on an annual basis.
CONSIDER INTERNAL CAPABILITIES
Current students and faculty can be served directly from your department via SharePoint, Canva, and other internally managed platforms.
Resources & Training
The following resources can help you plan and set expectations. None are required.
ROT Template* (Redundant, Outdated, Trivial): Spreadsheet with categories for auditing content
ITS Web Assets site: Contains list of available feature “blocks” and examples of migrated sites if you’d like to see what kinds of features are available in the new design theme
UNCG’s Photo Database, Merlin:This is where all professionally taken UNCG-owned photos are located. You must login with your UNCG credentials to get access to all of the photos.
*If you would like to use this, download a copy and work from that copy.
As part of the migration process, ITS requires training for all site editors*. This two-hour, in-person training session is held in the Bryan building on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. Registration is required. After attending a training session, editors are granted access to their respective websites. Upcoming NGWP Training dates can be viewed here. Contact Craig Biles for more information.
Once you have completed NGWP training, you will have more familiarity with the new design blocks in our sites. However, there is a learning curve. I will meet with you and walk through the editing process for your site. This should help you get comfortable with your site setup, and I can share some tips and tricks for using the new design blocks.
*This training may be phasing out, as ITS has not posted new training dates recently (as of August 2024). You can contact me for any needed training, and I will be happy to get you started.
Before you begin editing your department’s NGWP website, let’s meet to walk through the site together. I can give you an overview of how your site is set up, show you how to perform tasks, and answer any questions you may have. We have new guidelines for keeping the new sites lean and up-to-date, and I will need to share that info with you and get you set up with proper access to the necessary resources.
I am in the process of creating a Tutorials page, where you can see step-by-step instructions for completing common tasks.
