Graham Building 1009 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro

Bullying can be brutal. Not just on the mind, but also on the body. In this talk, Associate Professor Dr. Trevor Hoppe reports early findings from a study based on interviews with people who experienced bullying for being too masculine, too feminine, or just different. For most, the bullying stopped after graduation. But, they continued to feel its effects years, or even decades. Dr. Hoppe argues that embodied vigilance is a social disease, caused not by exposure to a virus or bacteria but by repeated exposure to negative social interactions: patterned exclusion, verbal and physical harassment, and heightened surveillance.
