Rising Up: How Islam Played a Role in Resistance to Enslavement
April 15 @ 2:00 pm – 3:15 pm
This presentation examines the different ways that people resisted enslavement through their faith and cultural traditions. Exploring various forms of resistance – both overt and subtle – from Southeast Asia to the United States across a millennium, it will consider the role of Islam as a specific catalyst of and driver for resistance.
It will also look at how resistance connected to Islam proved remarkably successful – but also had significant drawbacks. However, this event is not open to the public.
