Dr. Denise Rangel Tracy (Mathematics and Statistics alumna) received the Association for Women in Mathematics’ (AWM) 2020 Service Award. This award recognizes her volunteer service in helping to promote and support women in mathematics through AWM. Hoping to reach audiences beyond the mathematical community, Tracy has led projects using Wikipedia to increase awareness of the history of Women in Math. “Although stereotypes are changing, women are still thought of as a rarity in the mathematical sciences,” she said. “I think Wikipedia can be a gateway to learning about these women. Our history, our achievements, our struggles, all summarized a few mouse-clicks away from each other on a website many people already visit. I hope by working to improve and create new articles on women mathematicians I am helping people better know them and the work that they do.”
Many UNC Greensboro alumnae were honored with a 2020 “40 under 40” award from the Triad Business Journal, including Cristal Campbell Snow who received her B.S. in Media Studies and M.A. in Communication Studies. They were celebrated in a ceremony at the UNCG Cone Ballroom on February 27. The “40 under 40” award recognizes extraordinary young leaders in the Triad area.

Monica T. Davis (Interior Architecture MFA student) received the Economic Legacy Award from the Gamma Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She received the award due to her efforts on rehabilitating shotgun house in East Wilson and making a positive impact on the community. The award was presented on February 29 at the sorority’s 80th anniversary Diamonds and Pearls gala. She was accompanied by Professor Jo Leimenstoll (Interior Architecture) and Dr. Torren Gatson (History) from her thesis committee.

Dr. Keith Debbage (Geography, Environment, and Sustainability professor) received the inaugural and prestigious 2020 American Association of Geographers (AAG) – Kauffman Foundation Award for Best Paper in Geography and Entrepreneurship. Debbage’s paper titled, “Non-Farm Proprietorship Employment by U.S. Metropolitan Area,” was published recently in the Journal of Enterprising Communities. He will receive the award in Denver, CO at the AAG annual awards banquet, where he will also present his research in a special session highlighting research on geography and entrepreneurship to a wider audience. “To be honest,” said Debbage, “I am shocked, flattered and honored to receive this award.”
Professor Travis Hicks (Interior Architecture professor) received the 2020 Interior Design Educator Council (IDEC) Community Service Award. Hicks is director of the Center for Community-Engaged Design (CC-ED), a group that “leverages the power of design in community-based projects, particularly for people who are under-served or where resources are most scarce.” Most recently they have partnered with North Carolina Main Street, Tiny Houses Greensboro, Collaborative Cottage Grove, Amadi Way, Black Diamond Urban Farm, and Peace Haven Farms. “Clearly the work of the students, the course, the activities, all have impacted the role that interior design plays to address the health and well-being of the society,” said the awards committee. “Interior design is not about colors, but it is about tackling very important social issues.” The award was presented at the annual IDEC conference in Tulsa, OK on March 9.
Dr. Regis Kopper (Computer Science professor) and his lab received the Best Research Demonstration Award at the IEEE Virtual Reality Conference, which took place virtually on March 22-26, 2020. IEEE VR is the top Virtual Reality conference in the world, and it happened very successfully completely online for the first time in 27 years. Their demo simulated a next-generation User Interface (UI) that has the potential to increase safety and agility of police officers during traffic stops. View the demonstration here.
