Re-Balancing the Triforce: Gender-Bending and Cross-Dressing in the Legend of Zelda

In this talk, Dr. Sarah Stang will discuss the Zelda series’ playable hero, Link, in terms of his androgynous masculinity in the context of Japanese cultural norms as well as the eponymous Princess Zelda who cross-dresses and gender-bends her way to freedom and agency.
Bringing in queer theory, feminist theory, developer interviews, and player commentary, Dr. Stang will explore the series’ complex and often contradictory relationship with queerness, sexuality, and gender.
