Dr. Ayalew Osena, Associate Professor of Biology, has received a grant award from the University of Houston as part of a larger project funded by USDA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initative (AFRI). The project, Partnership: Elucidating biogeochemical cycling of Silicon to improve plant biomass, climate stress tolerance and CO2 sequestration, seeks to understand the interactions between naturally-occurring silicon, carbon, agricultural soil systems, and plants, particularly soybeans.

The Osena Research Group at UNCG works to identify novel genes for trait improvement in economically important crops and study how plants interact with substances in their environment.
