Video Options at UNCG

There are three main video options available at UNCG: Teams, Studio, and Panopto. All three will enable you to record a video you can share for students to watch on their own time. The table below summarizes the other main features of the tools:

TEAMS

Teams is part of our Microsoft 365 license. Teams is best used for virtual conferencing, such as online course meetings and meetings with small groups where two-way communication is needed. You can also go to the Calendar tab and click on “Meet Now” to get an empty meeting that you can use for recording asynchronous lecture material, including screensharing if needed. However, if you aren’t using Teams for two-way communication, then consider using Canvas Studio. When you create a Teams recording, the recording can be found in the RECORDINGS folder of your OneDrive, where you will then have to share it with your students. However, if your recording is done in a Team, such as for a course, it will also be available in the Team’s channel. You could download your recording and upload it to Studio as long as the file size is under 10GB. ITS is the primary support for Teams.

Note: There is a OneDrive integration in the rich content editor in Canvas that lets you embed your videos in Canvas, but if you go this route, be aware that there have been consistent problems with this tool’s functionality.

CANVAS STUDIO

Studio can be used to record videos for students to watch. However, Studio also has many other tools: you can use it to let students comment on the video timeline and you can insert quiz questions throughout the video. Quizzes can be synced with the Canvas Grade Center if you choose. These options can convert your videos from a passive activity for students to one where they are actively engaging with the content. Studio activities can be added in Canvas wherever you use the rich content editor or as an assignment (external tool submission). Studio automatically captions all videos. Studio allows you to trim your videos at any time.

Students can also use Studio to create and upload media projects, with the commenting feature giving the instructor a quick and easy way to provide targeted feedback, which can be done from within SpeedGrader. If you’re looking for a robust but asynchronous video tool, Studio is the way to go.

ClipChamp/Stream

Stream is the Microsoft video editing tool and has been merged with ClipChamp so you may see documentation referring to one or the other, but they are now essentially the same product. You can record from the camera or screen in ClipChamp, and you can also upload existing videos. ClipChamp has advanced editing tools, such as trimming, timeline comments, and transcripts. If you open your video in ClipChamp’s advanced editor, then you have significantly more editing options, such as adding text, templates, music, stock images, and transitions. To share a Stream/ClipChamp video, you can either paste the video’s share link in your course, or you could download the video and upload it into Studio, as long as the file size is under 10GB.

Note: There is a OneDrive integration in the rich content editor in Canvas that lets you embed your videos in Canvas, but if you go this route, be aware that there have been consistent problems with this tool’s functionality.
