IN MEMORIAM: DR. JOACHIM T. BAER

Dr. Joachim T. Baer, age 89, died on April 17, 2023, here in Greensboro. 

He taught Russian language and more at UNC Greensboro from 1973 to 1999. He always maintained his interest in UNCG and its people, reading each UNCG Magazine and UNCG Research Magazine with care. 
 
In 1953, the 20-year-old native of Germany, who had grown up amid the turmoil of World War II and its aftermath, arrived in the United States as an exchange student. He built a life as a scholar.  

He received his BA from Indiana University in Bloomington and his PhD from Harvard University. His first position was at Vanderbilt University. His profession took him to positions at Princeton University, NYU, and finally UNCG.  

During his career, he taught German, Russian, and Polish languages as well as Russian and Polish literature.  

He served as Department Head for UNCG’s Department of German and Russian from 1991 to 1998. He retired from UNC Greensboro in 1999 after more than 25 years of service to the university.  

As Professor Emeritus, he enjoyed teaching non-credit courses in World Literature through UNCG’s Emeritus Society. Among other honors, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the Polish-American Club of Raleigh.  

A memorial service will be held this Saturday (April 29, 2023) at 2 p.m. at First Moravian Church, 304 South Elam Avenue, Greensboro, NC.
