Dr. Yi Zhang (Mathematics and Statistics) received new funding from the Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics for the project “Studying Material Transport in the Vortical Flow Using Direct Numerical Simulations: Lagrangian and Eulerian Approaches.” Dr. Ling Xu is co-principal investigator on the project.

This project is a collaborative effort between Dr. Yi Zhang, assistant professor in mathematics and statistics at UNCG, and Dr. Ling Xu, assistant professor of mathematics at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT), to synthesize their teaching and research efforts to enhance the research and educational capacity in the area of computational mathematics at these two universities.

The targeted student participants are undergraduates in mathematics from NCAT and UNCG. Dr. Yi and Dr. Xu expect to recruit two undergraduates each.

The program duration will last from September 2021 to May 2022. The intellectual focus of this project is on methods of computational mathematics and their applications in fluid dynamics, which is highly interdisciplinary in nature, making the research project ideal for education and research training of STEM students in applied mathematics. The proposed project aligns with the current efforts by UNCG and NCAT in promoting data science and computational mathematics education.
