For Goldwater Scholar, Solutions to Antibiotic Resistance Could Stem from Trees

UNCG biochemistry student Janae Wofford has been awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for her innovative research into combating antibiotic-resistant “superbugs” by exploring natural compounds from trees. Guided by Dr. Nadja Cech, Wofford’s work focuses on identifying antimicrobial agents from the American Beech tree, aiming to develop new medicines to treat increasingly dangerous infections.

Following a national search, the Department of Media Studies welcomes Changhee Chun as Department Head effective August 1, 2025. Professor Chun comes to UNCG from Department of Art + Art History at The University of Texas at Arlington, where he served as Morgan Woodward Distinguished Professor in Film, leading the Cinematic Arts undergraduate and graduate programs.

UNC Greensboro Names Dr. Kelly Joyce as New Dean of College of Arts and Sciences

Following a comprehensive national search, UNC Greensboro has appointed Dr. Kelly Joyce as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, effective August 1, 2025. Dr. Joyce, a professor of sociology, served in various administrative roles at Drexel University, including Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Founding Director of the university’s Center for Science, Technology, and Society. She also served as program director for the Science, Technology, and Society program and the Ethics Education in Science and Engineering program at the National Science Foundation (NSF).

New UNCG Research Shows Southern Shrews Shrink in Winter

Newly published research from UNCG biology professor Dr. Bryan McLean and colleagues shows that the masked shrew, a small, mole-like mammal found in the Appalachian Mountains, shrinks its body and braincase to conserve energy during winter months.
