The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) at UNC Greensboro is pleased to welcome Michael Watson ’11 as its new senior director of development, effective Aug. 25, 2025.

A proud Spartan and Greensboro native, Watson brings extensive experience in university advancement and a deep personal commitment to the transformative power of public higher education. He returns to the College after previously serving in the development office at UNCG’s Weatherspoon Art Museum.

A first-generation college graduate and non-traditional student, Watson holds a B.A. in history from UNCG and an M.A. in public administration from Georgia College. His own academic journey fuels his dedication to higher education access and student opportunity.

In his new role, Watson will lead the College’s major gift efforts, identifying and engaging alumni and friends who wish to support CAS through philanthropic giving. Working closely with Dean Kelly Joyce and Development Officer Dorian Thompson, he will focus on aligning donor interests with the College’s strategic priorities to create meaningful, lasting impact.

Watson’s fundraising career includes his time at Georgia College in Milledgeville, GA, where he supported a wide range of departments and initiatives – including Andalusia, the Home of Flannery O’Connor; Georgia’s Old Governor’s Mansion; Leadership Programs; and the John E. Sallstrom Honors College. His work has centered on cultivating relationships, advancing institutional missions, and securing gifts that foster academic excellence and student success.

“I’m honored to step into this role with the College of Arts & Sciences,” he said. “As a UNCG alum and someone who believes deeply in the mission of public education, I’m excited to help grow the support that allows our students, faculty, and programs to thrive.”
