SUMMARY:Beyond One Data Type: MultimodalLearning and The Future of Precision Health
DESCRIPTION:Ashby Dialogues 2026-2026 Speakers’ SeriesRethinking the Algorithm: AI and the Human Experience\n\n\n\n\n\nBeyond One Data Type: Multimodal Learning and the Future of Precision Health\n\n\n\nDr. Yingcheng Sun\, UNCG Computer Science\n\n\n\nWe live in a world filled with multimodal data — text\, images\, videos\, signals\, graphs\, and more. Multimodal AI offers a promising way to integrate these heterogeneous data sources\, enabling more holistic and personalized clinical decision support. This talk will introduce the common multimodal learning approaches\, highlight key challenges and conclude with future directions toward reliable\, transparent\, and privacy-preserving clinical applications. \n\n\n\nLocation: Petty Building\, Room 213 \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Yingcheng Sun\, Computer Science (UNCG)

SUMMARY:Computer Science Colloquium By Dr. Jiangwen Sun
DESCRIPTION:Join the Computer Science Department for this presentation in their colloquium series! Dr. Jiangwen Sun will present\, “Impact of different loss functions in training DNN for understanding regulatory roles of DNA sequence in DNA methylation.” \n\n\n\nFunctonal genomic events\, such as DNA methylation\, regulate gene expression by moderating chromatin state\, playing critical roles in various important biological processes\, such as X-chromosome inactivation and aging. \n\n\n\nTheir aberrant activities have been linked to several diseases such as cancers\, immunological disorders\, and neurological disorders. \n\n\n\nDr. Sun will present the results from one of his recent efforts in this direction\, training deep neural networks to predict DNA methylation from DNA sequence. \n\n\n\nWe studied the impact of the use of different loss functions\, specifically cross-entropy loss and hinge loss in network training on various aspects of the trained network\, including the prediction performance\, learned sequence patterns\, and uncertainly in predictions. \n\n\n\nKeep an eye on the Department of Computer Science Colloquium Series here! Free and open to the public.
