SUMMARY:Rethinking the Algorithm: AI and the Human Experience - Ashby Dialogues Speaker Matthew Engelhard of Duke University
DESCRIPTION:Toward Interpretable\, Timely\, Context-Aware Clinical Decision Support\n\n\n\nRethinking the Algorithm: AI and the Human Experience\, part of the 2025-2026 Ashby Dialogues Speakers’ Series \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAI can monitor electronic health records for early signs of chronic conditions\, delivering timely and context-aware clinical recommendations to help improve patient outcomes. \n\n\n\nMatthew Englehard\, M.D.\, Ph.D. of Duke University will present new methods to predict chronic disease risks and deliver clear\, actionable recommendations at the right time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbstract: Early recognition of chronic conditions is critical to ensure patients receive timely\, appropriate care\, in turn promoting improved outcomes and long-term well-being. Passive\, AI-based surveillance of routine electronic health records (EHRs) provides information about diagnostic trajectories that can inform early actions supporting diagnosis and optimal disease management. However\, determining (a) when to take action and (b) what action to take depends not only on predicted risk\, but also on the broader clinical context\, including evolving health trajectories\, anticipated follow-up patterns\, competing risks\, and uncertainty over time. Further\, clinicians already face an unmanageable volume of alerts\, therefore clinical decision support (CDS) systems must deliver information at the right time\, in the right format\, and in a way that integrates seamlessly with existing workflows. In this talk\, I will describe steps toward development of CDS systems that combine interpretable longitudinal prediction from complex EHR data with sequential decision-making methods designed to optimize alert timing based on clinical context. In addition to predicting specific risks\, the resulting systems aim to generate context-aware clinical recommendations and justify them based on clinician-interpretable evidence from the EHR.

SUMMARY:When Should You Unfollow?: A Philosophical Guide to Political Disagreement with Professor Daniel Muñoz
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker\, Professor Daniel Muñoz\, is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UNC Chapel Hill\, and is a core faculty member in the Chapel Hill PPE (Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics) Program. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, he asks: should you\, for the sake of getting at the truth\, stop following sources that you often disagree with? \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Professor Muñoz will explore the argument that even if someone is less reliable than your other preferred sources\, they might still be more valuable. As long as the new source is (1) better than random chance and (2) independent of your other sources\, they’re going to add more for you than just following another person who just agrees with your familiar sources. \n\n\n\nLocation: MHRA Room 1214 \n\n\n\nHosted by the UNCG Department of Philosophy and the UNCG Philosophy Club

SUMMARY:Keeping it safe: privacy-protecting data sharing for AI
DESCRIPTION:Join the UNCG Department of Computer Science for this presentation in their colloquium series! \n\n\n\nSharing individually contributed data is a cornerstone of modern artificial intelligence. For example\, large language models (LLMs) were trained on hundreds of billion tokens scraped from the internet. However\, the data generated by individual users contain sensitive information\, the disclosure of which may incur serious privacy concerns. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Liyue Fan of UNC Charlotte will discuss her research efforts to enable broad data sharing\, while protecting individual privacy. \n\n\n\nA series of studies will be presented to show the research work that provides rigorous\, provable privacy guarantees while retaining the utility of the data. Future research opportunities in privacy-protecting artificial intelligence will also be shared. \n\n\n\nJoin us in Moore Humanities & Research Building (MHRA)\, Room 331! Free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Ethics Bowl
DESCRIPTION:All UNCG students are invited to participate in (or simply attend!) the Philosophy Department’s annual Ethics Bowl! \n\n\n\nWhat is an Ethics Bowl?   \n\n\n\nAn Ethics Bowl is a competition in which small teams of students answer questions about morally complex scenarios. The Ethics Bowl format is distinct from a debate in some notable ways. Perhaps most importantly\, in an Ethics Bowl it is possible for competitors to agree with one another about the topics being discussed. The goal for all competitors is to draw out as much rational clarity as possible on the issues at stake\, and in this sense\, competing teams are collaborators.  \n\n\n\nTeams are awarded points on the basis of the coherence and insight of their contributions to a respectful and productive dialogue. The top two teams will receive prizes. \n\n\n\nThe deadline to sign up is Friday\, September 1. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the Ethics Bowl and sign up here.
