SUMMARY:Jon Henner Memorial Accessibility in Games Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is welcome to join us for the opening event in our speaker series themed around how accessibility and video gaming go together. This speaker series is held in memoriam of Jon Henner. Henner was a professor in the Interpreting\, Deaf Education and Advocacy department at UNCG\, and unfortunately passed away from cancer in 2023. \n\n\n\nHenner was a gamer and planned to host an event like this on campus with the Network for the Cultural Study of Video-gaming. The first event in this series will give participants a chance to see the Esports Arena\, and play games related to accessibility\, or games that have great accessibility features. October 24th will be when we host our first speaker – Sky LaRell Anderson from the University of St. Thomas.

SUMMARY:"And Also the Ice Age Comes and Goes"
DESCRIPTION:The Discussion of Climate Change and Values in Gaming Discussion Forums\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Kerstin Radde-Antweiler explores climate change in relation to video games and gaming practices\, analyzing discussions on environmental games and their narratives. \n\n\n\nDespite the prominence of climate change themes in games\, her research reveals a lack of discussion about their content and connections to real-world events on gaming forums compared to other media platforms. However\, reactions on gaming forums indicate skepticism and rejection of moralizing clilmate change narratives\, reflecting broader societal distrust of governmental institutions and politicians\, alongside other societal issues like the COVID-19 pandemic. \n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kerstin Radde-Antweiler\, University of Bremen

SUMMARY:Videogaming and Asian Mythology
DESCRIPTION:Xenia Zeiler\, University of Helsinki\n\n\n\nMythological narratives\, names\, and symbols figure intensively in video games. Elements of Asian mythology\, including but not limited to Buddhist and Hindu mythology\, have been included in games produced in different world regions – in and beyond Asia – since the early days of video game production. This talk discusses prominent examples and also touches upon specific challenges and methods for researching these themes. \n\n\n\nLocation: Foust Building\, Room 111. Remote participation will also be available on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nLearn more about this topic with Xenia\n\n\n\n\nSponsored by the Classics Gaming Collaborative\, a part of the Network for the Cultural Study of Videogaming at UNC Greensboro.
