SUMMARY:'Why Are There Flat Earthers?': a presentation in the Great Conversation series by Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan
DESCRIPTION:The planet Earth is a sphere (Technically\, it’s an ‘oblate spheroid’). \n\n\n\nSo why\, since 2016\, do an increasing number of people believe that it is flat—something known to be false for over two thousand years? The answer is that they are led to this conclusion by a specific theory of knowledge—an extreme version of a view held by 17th and 18th century philosophers\, such as John Locke and David Hume. \n\n\n\nThis presentation lays out these theories\, explains where they go wrong\, and shows what they reveal about our own knowledge of the world. \n\n\n\nRead here!

SUMMARY:Philosophy Ethics Bowl
DESCRIPTION:All UNCG students are invited to participate in (or simply attend!) the Philosophy Department’s annual Ethics Bowl! \n\n\n\nWhat is an Ethics Bowl?   \n\n\n\nAn Ethics Bowl is a competition in which small teams of students answer questions about morally complex scenarios. The Ethics Bowl format is distinct from a debate in some notable ways. Perhaps most importantly\, in an Ethics Bowl it is possible for competitors to agree with one another about the topics being discussed. The goal for all competitors is to draw out as much rational clarity as possible on the issues at stake\, and in this sense\, competing teams are collaborators.  \n\n\n\nTeams are awarded points on the basis of the coherence and insight of their contributions to a respectful and productive dialogue. The top two teams will receive prizes. \n\n\n\nThe deadline to sign up is Friday\, September 1. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the Ethics Bowl and sign up here.
