SUMMARY:Juneteenth Documentary Showing & Discussion: "After Sherman"
DESCRIPTION:Join UNC Greensboro’s African American and African Diaspora Studies (AADS) program for a special documentary showing in honor of Juneteenth. \n\n\n\nAbout the film\, “After Sherman:” Returning to the coastal South Carolina land that his family purchased after emancipation\, filmmaker Jon-Sesrie Goff’s desire to explore his Gullah/Geechee roots transforms into a poetic investigation of Black inheritance\, trauma\, and generational wisdom\, amidst the violent tensions that define America’s collective history.  \n\n\n\nMedia Studies professor Hassan Pitts and UNCG students will engage in a discussion of the film immediately following the viewing. \n\n\n\nAttendees will have a chance to view the ongoing art exhibits following this event. \n\n\n\nThis film is viewable on Kanopy though the University Library. Watch the trailer at pbs.org.

SUMMARY:Indian Ocean Winds Movement Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How can movement help us understand our own experiences with medicine\, as well those of people in the past? \n\n\n\nThis accessible workshop welcomes participants into an exploration of the illness and therapeutics through our bodies\, specifically through improvised movement. Drawing on a medical text composed in the medieval Indian Ocean world\, Shireen will present a movement score for us to explore. Her facilitation style is inspired by contact improvisation\, ensemble thinking and the disability dance community. Though it is not open to the public\, this workshop is accessible to all bodyminds\, including those with no dance experience.

SUMMARY:Rising Up: How Islam Played a Role in Resistance to Enslavement
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the different ways that people resisted enslavement through their faith and cultural traditions. Exploring various forms of resistance – both overt and subtle – from Southeast Asia to the United States across a millennium\, it will consider the role of Islam as a specific catalyst of and driver for resistance. \n\n\n\nIt will also look at how resistance connected to Islam proved remarkably successful – but also had significant drawbacks. However\, this event is not open to the public.
