SUMMARY:By the Book: Lisa Tolbert\, "Beyond Piggly Wiggly"
DESCRIPTION:UNC Greensboro Professor of History Lisa C. Tolbert dives into the popularization of self-service grocery stories in her new book\, Beyond Piggly Wiggly: Inventing the American Self-Service Store (University of Georgia Press). She will be in conversation with J. David Gwynn\, UNCG Libraries and founder of the Groceteria website. \n\n\n\nFree program. \n\n\n\nSigning to follow with copies available for purchase from Scuppernong Books.  \n\n\n\nAbout the book\n\n\n\nPatented in 1917\, Piggly Wiggly was by far the most influential self-service store of the early twentieth century. Before 1940 it was the only self-service chain with a national distribution network\, but it was neither the first nor the only version. Beyond Piggly Wiggly reveals the importance of Piggly Wiggly in the invention of self-service and goes beyond the history of a single firm to explore the role of small business entrepreneurs who invented the first self-service stores in a grassroots social process. \n\n\n\nDuring the 1920s and 1930s a minority of enterprising grocers experimented with a wide variety of (sometimes wacky) design ideas for automating shopping. They created specialized stores designed as enclosed retail systems that went far beyond open display techniques to construct unique physical and psychological advantages for automating salesmanship. Beyond Piggly Wiggly offers the first perspective on the national scale of experimentation and connects the southern Jim Crow origins of self- service to the national history of this mass retailing method. Empirical analysis of store arrangements demonstrates how small stores that have previously been overlooked or undervalued as quaint anomalies were integral to the creation of supermarkets. Ultimately\, self-service was more than a business decision; it was a fundamentally new social practice. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Philosophy Ethics Bowl
DESCRIPTION:All UNCG students are invited to participate in (or simply attend!) the Philosophy Department’s annual Ethics Bowl! \n\n\n\nWhat is an Ethics Bowl?   \n\n\n\nAn Ethics Bowl is a competition in which small teams of students answer questions about morally complex scenarios. The Ethics Bowl format is distinct from a debate in some notable ways. Perhaps most importantly\, in an Ethics Bowl it is possible for competitors to agree with one another about the topics being discussed. The goal for all competitors is to draw out as much rational clarity as possible on the issues at stake\, and in this sense\, competing teams are collaborators.  \n\n\n\nTeams are awarded points on the basis of the coherence and insight of their contributions to a respectful and productive dialogue. The top two teams will receive prizes. \n\n\n\nThe deadline to sign up is Friday\, September 1. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the Ethics Bowl and sign up here.

SUMMARY:CAS Diversity Award Presentation: Jeffrey Kaplan and the UNCG Prison Education Program
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan with a former student in California\n\n\n\nUNCG’s College of Arts & Sciences invites you to its annual presentation of the Dean’s Award for the Promotion of Diversity and Inclusiveness. \n\n\n\nThe 2023 award recipient is Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan\, a UNCG professor of philosophy\, for his development of the UNCG Prison Education Program. \n\n\n\nThis program\, which has set up a college education program at Butner Federal Prison in North Carolina\, pierces the barrier between prisons and our community and advances the university’s mission of “redefining the 21st century public research university as an inclusive\, collaborative\, and responsive institution.” \n\n\n\nBefore coming to UNCG\, Kaplan spent four years teaching college courses in San Quentin State Prison in California. He will talk about some of the surprising things he learned teaching in the California State Prison system and which of those lessons do and do not apply to the UNCG Prison Education Program that he has established here in North Carolina. \n\n\n\nUNCG faculty\, staff\, students\, and friends are invited to join us as Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan shares more about the UNCG Prison Education Program. \n\n\n\nA reception with light refreshments will follow. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nabout cas News & Events\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADDITIONAL LINKSCAS HeadlinesSubmit a Story IdeaCAS Events CalendarPublic Events on CampusSubmit an Event For CAS CalendarCAS Communications \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMEDIA CONTACTAmanda KennisonDirector of Communications336.334.5397adkennis@uncg.edu
