SUMMARY:Travis Mulhauser Alumni Homecoming Fiction Reading
DESCRIPTION:The Creative Writing Program at UNC Greensboro and the UNCG Department of English will host a fiction reading by UNCG alum Travis Mulhauser on Thursday\, October 1st at 6PM in the UNCG Alumni House. A part of the Department of English’s homecoming celebration\, the event will be preceded by a reception. It is free and open to the public. \n\n\n\nTRAVIS MULHAUSER is the author of the novels\, Fair Chase (Grand Central/Hachette)\, The Trouble Up North (Grand Central/Hatchette)\, and Sweetgirl (Ecco/Harper Collins). The Trouble Up North was one of NPR’s Books We Love in 2025\, received a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly\, was an Amazon Editor’s Choice Pick\, and an Apple Audio Must Listen selection. Sweetgirl was long-listed for The Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize\, was a Michigan Notable Book Award winner\, an Indie Next Pick\, and was named one of Ploughshares Best Books of the New Year. He currently lives currently in Durham\, North Carolina with his wife\, two children\, and dog.

DESCRIPTION:On every Tuesday evening from September 8 to November 24 (except for Fall Break)\, from 5 to 6:30 pm\, join us in Graham 421 to play through The Last of Us. As we play\, we will discuss the game’s major themes\, our reactions\, and the online discourse surrounding the game.\n\n\n\nThis school year\, be part of an ongoing exploration into The Last of Us\, its sequel and television adaptation\, and the online response to these installments. What ethical dilemmas do the games and show present? What possible hope do these characters hold onto\, despite their dreary reality? How do fan communities form around those topics of despair and difficult ethical questions?  \n\n\n\nWe will discuss the online reactionary phenomenon known as #gamergate\, hearing from several guest speakers who can guide us through fan groups and hate groups alike and how they received The Last of Us Part II in particular. But first\, we will begin with collaborative play. In order to discuss fan communities and reception\, we need to know the game.
