SUMMARY:Documentary Film and Talk: "Wilmington on Fire" and the Power of Public Memory
DESCRIPTION:As part of College of Arts & Sciences Week 2026\, Our Cinematheque welcomes acclaimed North Carolina filmmaker Christopher Everett for a special screening and conversation exploring the intersections of history\, race\, memory\, and social justice as portrayed in his film “Wilmington on Fire“.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEverett’s groundbreaking documentary brought national attention to the 1898 Wilmington Massacre—the only successful coup d’état in United States history—and its enduring impact on democracy\, race relations\, and historical memory. \n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a moderated conversation and audience Q&A with the filmmaker\, inviting students\, faculty\, and community members to consider how documentary filmmaking can illuminate the past while shaping conversations about the future. \n\n\n\nIn this exclusive College of Arts & Sciences Week event\, Everett will discuss the continuing relevance of this history and share an advance work-in-progress cut from the forthcoming next chapter of the Wilmington on Fire project\, offering audiences a rare opportunity to engage with new material before its official release. Building on the original film and subsequent chapters\, the new work examines contemporary struggles for historical justice\, community empowerment\, and the ongoing effort to reclaim overlooked histories. \n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\n\n\nAbout the film\n\n\n\nThe film documents the violent overthrow of Wilmington’s multiracial government and the destruction of a thriving Black community\, a history long omitted from mainstream narratives: The Wilmington Massacre of 1898 was a bloody attack on the African-American community by a heavily armed white mob with the support of the North Carolina Democratic Party on November 10\, 1898 in the port city of Wilmington\, North Carolina. This incident has been barely mentioned and omitted from most history books. It was not until 2006\, after the North Carolina General Assembly published a report on it\, that the tragedy became known to the general public.

SUMMARY:Ashby Dialogues: The Last of Us Play Sessions
DESCRIPTION:On every Tuesday evening from September 8 to November 24 (except for Fall Break)\, from 5 to 6:30 pm\, join us in Graham 421 to play through The Last of Us. As we play\, we will discuss the game’s major themes\, our reactions\, and the online discourse surrounding the game.\n\n\n\nThis school year\, be part of an ongoing exploration into The Last of Us\, its sequel and television adaptation\, and the online response to these installments. What ethical dilemmas do the games and show present? What possible hope do these characters hold onto\, despite their dreary reality? How do fan communities form around those topics of despair and difficult ethical questions? \n\n\n\nWe will discuss the online reactionary phenomenon known as #gamergate\, hearing from several guest speakers who can guide us through fan groups and hate groups alike and how they received The Last of Us Part II in particular. But first\, we will begin with collaborative play. In order to discuss fan communities and reception\, we need to know the game.

SUMMARY:The World According to Sound
DESCRIPTION:An immersive sonic experience about the spirit of academic inquiry \n\n\n\nSurrounded by an octophonic ring of powerful loudspeakers\, you are going to sit in the dark for 70 minutes\, wear an eye mask\, and be taken on a sonic trip with fellow members of your academic community. \n\n\n\nYou’ll hear the vibrations of the Golden Gate Bridge\, footsteps of ants\, recordings made a century ago\, and silence turned into music. You’ll be transported to 1930s Berlin\, up to the ionosphere\, under a sand dune\, and into the middle of a choir singing in a church built in the 6th century. \n\n\n\nYou’ll hear ideas\, essays\, books\, theories\, and contemporary research all translated into soundscapes that challenge you to rethink the world through your ears instead of your eyes…and ultimately to reconnect with what makes academic inquiry so meaningful. \n\n\n\nThe performance will be followed by a Q&A with co-producers Chris Hoff and Sam Harnett. \n\n\n\nReserve your spot at Eventbrite. \n\n\n\nSOUNDS\n\n\n\nThe show features a wide range of sounds and sonic experiences\, taking you from the melodious to the dissonant\, the amusing to the solemn\, the nostalgic to the unfamiliar. It’s totally fine (even encouraged) to let yourself react to what you’re hearing: laugh\, exclaim\, or emote in any way you see fit. It’s all part of the communal listening experience. If at any point you need to leave or take a break\, feel free to step out. We look forward to taking this sonic voyage with you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReserve a Spot!

SUMMARY:A Touch of Reverie and Quaint Lunacy: Mahmadji of Pakhli Sings From Prison (c. 1886)
DESCRIPTION:Register for this Teams event at go.uncg.edu/mahmadjipakhli \n\n\n\nAround 1886 CE\, a wandering poet named Mahmadji of Pakhli was imprisoned in Abbottabad for breaking a Hindu’s leg in a drunken fight. What remains of him in the historical record are some processing notes—that he claimed to be a king and all was not as it seemed\, that this was not his first encounter with the law\, that he was a “lunatic” (divana)—and two Pashto ghazals. \n\n\n\nThe tale of Mahmadji is a sort of anti-history of Afghans\, cut away from the rationality of empire and ethnostate through the framework of dreaming and madness. Thus is Mahmadji shuttled to the wrong end of the spectrum between poet (shaʿir) and itinerant bard (dum)\, the latter denigrated in terms of both race and literary craft. But what happens when we grow history from such outcast reverie and lunacy? In this talk\, we invite ourselves into Mahmadji of Pakhli’s social imaginary\, dreamt up at the zenith of British carceral power. We will wander along the radical pathways of Mahmadji’s love songs\, in which we find a strange sovereignty bleeding through the black locks of the beloved\, rage for an impoverished girl refusing to work the land\, and more. \n\n\n\nPresented by: Dr. Tanvir AhmedAssistant Professor\, Arizona State University\n\n\n\nTanvir Ahmed works on the social\, cultural\, and intellectual history of Islam with an eyetoward critical historiography\, rebellion\, and thaumaturgy. His present monograph explores popular uprisings against the Mongol Empire across the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. He is also working on a project for the Cambridge Elements in the Global Middle Ages series\, tentatively called The Idea of Afghanistan. Alongside various academic articles\, he has published works of cultural criticism\, translation\, and fiction. He is an Assistant Professor of History at Arizona State University.
