SUMMARY:Time of Death in the Roman Empire: Timekeeping\, Astrology\, and Afterlife Among Christians and Pagans
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Simeon Ehrlich (University of Wisconsin-Madison\, Institute for Research in the Humanities) in this free public lecture which explores the more than 1000 ancient Roman tombstones which record the times of death of children. Arguing that these “hour texts” were the basis of horoscopes for the dead to gain protection from deities in the afterlife\, Dr. Ehrlich explores how this practice spread around the Roman Empire and transformed under Christian influence. \n\n\n\nThis event will be hosted on Mircosoft Teams\, so make sure to register at: go.uncg.edu/amsaehrlich.

SUMMARY:When Should You Unfollow?: A Philosophical Guide to Political Disagreement with Professor Daniel Muñoz
DESCRIPTION:Our speaker\, Professor Daniel Muñoz\, is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UNC Chapel Hill\, and is a core faculty member in the Chapel Hill PPE (Philosophy\, Politics\, and Economics) Program. \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, he asks: should you\, for the sake of getting at the truth\, stop following sources that you often disagree with? \n\n\n\nIn this talk\, Professor Muñoz will explore the argument that even if someone is less reliable than your other preferred sources\, they might still be more valuable. As long as the new source is (1) better than random chance and (2) independent of your other sources\, they’re going to add more for you than just following another person who just agrees with your familiar sources. \n\n\n\nLocation: MHRA Room 1214 \n\n\n\nHosted by the UNCG Department of Philosophy and the UNCG Philosophy Club

SUMMARY:Classics Gaming Collaborative Annual Gaming Lab & Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Ancients’ Guide to Esports Production: Manufacturing the Spirit of Competition from Antiquity to League of Legends\n\n\n\nLed by Kevin Wong (Harvard University)\n\n\n\nSince its first World Championship in 2011\, Riot Games’ League of Legends has profoundly shaped the production\, scale\, and vision of esports as we know it today. Riot’s success at cultivating League’s esports scene can be traced\, in large part\, to an ambitious media strategy—one that has managed to create and harness a synthetic spirit of competition. \n\n\n\nUsing media to cultivate competition and market new modes of entertainment is\, however\, not a new concept. In fact\, it’s practically ancient. This lecture will examine how League of Legends deploys\, adapts\, and innovates upon the same strategies of cultural production that the ancient Greeks and Romans were using two millennia ago to successfully market their forms of competitive entertainment. \n\n\n\nWhile esports may represent the future of entertainment\, looking back at the distant past can shed light on the timeless mechanics of cultural production: How do aesthetic decisions in League’s esports production help to transform top players like Faker into celebrities? Are there specific rhetorical strategies that commentators use to keep audiences primed for big plays and moments where players ‘pop off’? How exactly does the game’s extensive transmedia worldbuilding—cinematics\, music\, and now with the recently completed Arcane\, television—work to generate suspense and hype for its esports scene? \n\n\n\nThe Greeks\, too\, sold and circulated statues\, merchandise\, and media based on their winning athletes. The Romans\, too\, hosted their action-packed contests in grand arenas equipped with the latest technologies. The epic poets\, too\, had specific ways of commentating on warfare that made celebrated heroes out of soldiers\, and set all of their stories within an elaborate transmedia universe that gave each battle a larger cosmic significance. Employing these technologies of culture\, the ancients managed to turn their competitive practices of war\, athletic competitions\, and gladiatorial games into some of history’s most enduring cultural phenomena—resonances of which we continue to find all over the contemporary world of esports. \n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Wong\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP now!

SUMMARY:UNCG Jewish Studies Talk "People Without History Are Dust: Queer Desire and the Holocaust" with Dr. Anna Hájková
DESCRIPTION:Where are the stories of great queer love in the Shoah? There are almost none. \n\n\n\nAnna Hájková explains why the history of same-sex desire in the Shoah\, that is\, queerness among Jews persecuted by the Nazis for their race\, has been excluded and marginalized\, and how its return to our understanding of the Holocaust can offer an inclusive and feminist history of this genocide. \n\n\n\nBased on original and extensive archival research\, her talk offers a concise insight into the queer history of the Holocaust for beginners and advanced alike. This insightful talk is free and open to the public. Trigger Warning: The talk will include discussion of sexualized violence. \n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker: Dr Anna Hájková is Reader of Modern European Continental History at the University of Warwick\, UK\, and is a 2024-2025 fellow at the University of Michigan Frankel Institute for Judaic Studies. She is the author of The Last Ghetto: An Everyday History of Theresienstadt (2020)\, among other works. Hájková is a pioneer of queer Holocaust history.
