Dr. Hunter Gardner, a professor of Classics at the University of South Carolina, will be discussing her work on plague narratives in Rome’s historical record, especially Livy’s accounts of the frequent outbreaks in the early Republic, but also select outbreaks recorded during the early imperial period, up through the so-called Antonine plague (c. 165-180 CE), frequently recognized as the first pandemic on record.
