SUMMARY:A Reflection on a Fantastic Journey in Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:This seminar\, given by Dr. Jerry Walsh\, will present an academic chemist’s unexpected path through a career. Amazing opportunities that spontaneously arose during early studies shaped an experience that only later can be fully appreciated. Reflection on scientific\, cultural\, and personal experiences suggests that one should cherish accomplishments that are part of your unique history and your contribution to the world. Scientifically\, the chemistry of boron cage compounds will illustrate a world of chemistry outside of species with traditional structure and bonding. A variety of experiments exploring structure and reactivity of transition metal complexes will be discussed. Use of chemical demonstrations and hands-on activities will be used to inspire observers to be amazed as well as curious about the world. \n\n\n\nPlease join us after the seminar (2:15 pm) for a reception in the 4th floor lobby of the Sullivan Bldg. honoring Jerry Walsh’s many years of excellent contributions to UNCG and the education of our students. Dr. Walsh will be retiring at the end of the semester\, so this is an opportunity to wish him well and express our thanks.
